Purple yam

Dioscorea alata L.

It is a tuber originally from Southeast Asia. Its leaves are bright green, large, heart-shaped, and grow up to 25 cm. long. As a tropical plant that grows best in hot and humid places. Propagation is asexual from whole or partial pieces of tubers. It prefers light, slightly acidic soils with little sand, good drainage and abundant organic matter.

Applications:

It is an edible plant, rich in carbohydrates, vitamins B and C. It contains calcium, iron and phosphorus. It also has medicinal qualities with anti-inflammatory, detoxifying and purifying effects. It is used for diseases like rheumatism, arthritis and inflammations.
