Heliconia psittacorum L.f.
It is an herbaceous plant native to America that can reach 1.5 m. in height. Its leaves are lanceolate, bright dark green, 1 m. long and 20 cm. wide. Its tubular flowers have orange petals with green ends. They bloom from an erect ear inflorescence formed by very sharp alternate bracts. Its fruit is a blue drupe. Propagation occurs by division, or by separation of the sprouts. Warm climates, and humid, acidic or neutral soils with good drainage are preferred. It requires a lot of light and abundant irrigation.
It is an ornamental plant, commonly used in outdoor gardens.
